Miri – 2 October 2014 – Two accounting graduates from the School of Business of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) were awarded Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) awards at an award ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Ling Yi Qing received the ‘Excellence Award for Best Accounting Graduate’ in recognition of his outstanding academic performance, exemplary leadership qualities and desire for excellence. He is currently pursuing his ACCA Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) certification.
Meanwhile, Jong Ling, who received the ‘Meritorious Achievement’ award, was recognised for her outstanding academic performance and desire to strive for excellence in the pursuit of an accounting qualification. She is pursuing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) with the School of Business at Curtin Sarawak.
Both were nominated for the awards by the school and were selected from nominees from both public and private universities in Malaysia. Both went through stringent interview sessions and successfully beat the other students for the awards.
In congratulating Ling and Jong, Professor Glennda Scully, head of the School of Accounting in the Curtin Business School at Curtin’s main campus in Perth, said she hoped the both of them will continue to perform at a very high standard in the future and wished them all the best in their future careers.
An exemplary student, Ling has received a number of accolades in the past, including the Ernst & Young Most Outstanding Year 2 Student, KPMG Academic Excellence Award, CPA Australia Book Prize Award and Wehaya Best Foundation Student in Business Management Award. He was also placed on the Dean’s List for four consecutive years from 2010 to 2013.
In addition, Ling previously underwent an internship with KPMG Malaysia, and was an apprentice to Sajith Sivanandan, Country Manager of Google Malaysia, in July 2013 after being selected as one of the winners of the Graduan Apprentice Challenge in conjunction with the Graduan Aspire 2013 Career and Postgraduate Fair.
Jong Ling, who is on both the Vice-Chancellor’s List and Dean List, was a recipient of the ACCA Achievement Award in Accounting (Auditing) and Wehaya Best Foundation Student in Accounting Award. She represented Curtin Sarawak in the final round of the Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) 1Malaysia Investment Quiz 2013 and the 12th Inter-Varsity Accounting Quiz 2013 organised by Multimedia University, Melaka Campus.
During their studies at Curtin Sarawak, both students were very active in extra-curricular activities, organising accounting-related events such as workshops, leadership camps and field trips. Ling and Jong Ling graduated in April this year.
