Cybersecurity is an up and coming area in the IT and computer science industry. This article explains the academic pathway to a career in cybersecurity.

What Do Cybersecurity Specialists Do?

Cybersecurity specialists are responsible for finding the best way to keep information on platforms such as computer networks, mobile devices and payment software from being compromised. Many job duties of cybersecurity specialists are similar to those working in IT. The more specific tasks related to cybersecurity include building security measures during the development stage of software systems, searching for risks and loopholes in hardware and software, and monitoring networks for attacks and intrusions. When a threat or breach is identified, cybersecurity specialists have to work quickly to analyse the situation and stop the source from doing any further damage. Cybersecurity specialists also need to liaise with relevant authorities if necessary when the perpetrator is identified. 

 

Subjects in a Cybersecurity Degree Programme 

Individuals who are interested in furthering their studies in cybersecurity need to have a strong foundation in Mathematics, namely Mathematics or Additional Mathematics subjects at pre-university level. A number of higher education institutions offer undergraduate programmes in computer science with specialisation in cybersecurity or stand-alone cybersecurity courses. A Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity is usually a three-year programme which aims to teach fundamental theories of computer science such as programming language, software development, data communication, computer organisation and operating systems. Some of the subjects in a cybersecurity programme include Computer Networks & LAN, Operating Systems Concepts, System Analysis & Design, Artificial Intelligence, Professional & Enterprise Development, Router Security Technologies and System Programming & Computer Control. 

 

Important Skills Needed

Cybersecurity professionals need to have high competency in IT skills and knowledge regarding hardware, software and networks. Analytical skills are also important when it comes to identifying the strengths and weaknesses of IT systems. In addition, they need strong attention to detail, logical thinking, a forensic approach to overcome obstacles and good investigative skills in order to identify cyberattacks successfully. Furthermore, cybersecurity professionals need to study how hackers work and be up to date with the latest developments in cybercrime.  

 

Job Opportunities 

Those with undergraduate qualifications in cybersecurity can seek employment in a number of places including network providers, banks, hospitals, schools and universities. Large companies with a huge database such as commercial airlines, consultancy firms and government organisations also need cybersecurity experts. Other than Cybersecurity Specialists, positions in cybersecurity departments include Security Auditors, Security Managers, Security Solutions Specialists, Security Consultants, Information Security Officers and Vulnerability Assessors. Cybersecurity jobs are either office based or home based depending on the company. Freelance work is common as specialists only need a computer and Internet connection to protect the company’s servers. 

 

As many more companies move their businesses’ online, cybersecurity professionals are highly sought after in the IT sector to protect their clients’ databases and ensure all processes run smoothly.
