SUNWAY UNIVERSITY FACULTY TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY IN CAMBRIDGE

  JCF exchanges MoA with the University of Cambridge’s Gonville and Caius College to have two Sunway University staff immerse in the Cambridge experience   Sunway University, through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), and the University of Cambridge deepened their relationship on September 10, 2018, through the exchange of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) allowing for two exceptional staff per year from Sunway University to study at the University of Cambridge for four weeks, in perpetuity.   Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s Founding Trustee and Sunway University’s Chancellor, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO and the University of Cambridge’s Master of Gonville and Caius College, Professor Sir Alan Fersht FRS, exchanged the signed MoA documents at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa to commence the programme.   “The establishment of the Scholars-in-Residence programme will further deepen the relationship between Sunway University and the University of Cambridge, which has allowed for a robust exchange of ideas between our two institutions since we first linked up in 2014,” said Cheah.   “Under this programme, there will be tremendous opportunity for Sunway University’s faculty members to gain experience in a highly research-intensive environment. It offers them an opportunity to engage with and learn from leading researches, and have access to the great libraries and laboratories of a world-renowned university and in their return produce world-class Malaysian graduates that will contribute to the sustainable progress of Malaysia,” added Cheah.   “I am delighted that the relationship between Gonville and Caius College, the University of Cambridge and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation is to be further enhanced by the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Scholar-in-Residence programme, through which we look forward to welcoming the very best academics from Sunway Education Group to undertake research in Cambridge,” said Fersht.   The University of Cambridge is one of the most prestigious Universities in the world by international rankings. According to the Times Higher Education ranking no other institution in the world ranks in the top 10 for as many subjects as the University of Cambridge.   The University of Cambridge is associated with 116 Nobel Laureates, 11 Fields Medalists, 6 Turing Award winners and 15 British Prime Ministers. Notable alumni include scientists Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, and Isaac Newton. Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman is also an alumnus of the University.   In conjunction with the MoA exchange, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation also made a donation to the Tammy Chen Fund in support of the Tammy Chen Graduate Studentships at Gonville and Cauis College. The studentships will be open to anyone in the world, provided they show the requisite academic merit. The College hopes that the first Tammy Chen Graduate Student will begin their studies at Caius in October 2018.   The Scholar-in-Residence MoA exchange and the Tammy Chen Fund cheque presentation were witnessed by Gonville and Cauis College’s Fellow and Development Director, James Howell; Sunway Group’s Education and Healthcare Division’s CEO, Dr Lee Weng Keng; Sunway Education Group’s and Sunway University’s Senior Executive Director, Dr Elizabeth Lee; Sunway University’s Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor, Professor Jarlath Ronayne AM; Sunway Education Group’s Executive Director, Phang Koon Tuck; Sunway University’s Provost, Professor Peter Heard; and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s Administrator, Jane Poh.   Among the many scholarships available under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation are the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation–Sunway Group Scholarship, Jeffrey Cheah Travel Grants for Southeast Asia Studies at Harvard, Jeffrey Cheah Scholar-in-Residence at Oxford, Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellowships at Cambridge and Oxford, Sunway University Postgraduate by Research Scholarship and the Continuing Scholarships at Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and Sunway College, and the Oxford-Jeffrey Cheah Graduate Scholarship.
