MSc in Health Data Science

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

TLDR: The MSc in Health Data Science is delivered by internationally recognised experts to meet the unprecedented demand for data scientists in healthcare.

Program Description

Health Data Science is a rapidly growing discipline where skilled people are in extremely high demand due to data-led innovations across the sector. Health-related data are generated form many sources including observational studies, clinical trials, computational biology, electronic medical records, health care claims, genetic and economic epidemiology, environmental health, sports science and climate change.

Data science skills are in unprecedented demand from many industries, particularly in healthcare. From precision medicine, next to gen genomics, to individualised monitoring devices the growth in data collection and data-led support systems is revolutionising service delivery.

Data science skills are in demand across a wide spectrum of industries, with an estimated average annual growth of 35% per annum. As the magnitude and complexity of data grows, professionals with theoretical and applied training in health data science are needed to evaluate health care interventions and outcomes, as well as the performance of health care systems.

The Sonraí Health Data Science Research Cluster in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is at the forefront of this development with internationally recognised expertise in this discipline, evidenced by the over €40 million in health research funding, a wealth of highly impactful publications and software, extensive graduate supervision and international collaborations.

We are ideally located in the West of Ireland to lead in offering a programme to service the demands of the local device industry, as well the burgeoning demand nationally and internationally.

Why You Should Apply

Are you interested in working as a data scientist in healthcare? Do you have either a strong quantitative background, or interest in Healthcare but wish to develop your data science and data analytics skills?  If yes, this conversion MSc is for you.

What Will You Study?

You will learn the key statistical and computing skills needed to design studies, analyse, interpret and translate research findings to evaluate health interventions, services, programmes, and policies.  The foundation courses provide a broad range of skills in statistical modelling, machine learning and clinical research. These skills are brought to fruition in an interdisciplinary capstone research project with either an academic or industry focus, tailored around your skills, experience and interests.

Who will Deliver the Modules?

You will learn from internationally recognised expert statisticians, bioinformaticians, clinicians, mathematicians, health economists, epidemiologists and computer scientists including invited speakers from Medtech, Pharma and Data Science.

Who Can You Apply?

The minimum entry requirement is an upper second class (or equivalent) honours degree from a recognised University in a relevant subject (e.g. statistics, mathematics, health, biomedical sciences, engineering, computer science) or evidence of achievement at postgraduate level.
