UTAR OFFERS NEW INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

Industrial management opportunities

Technological advancement has become an integral part of Malaysia's growth as an industrialised nation. With the help of technology, Malaysia is steadfast in providing for the modern day requirements of investor companies based in the country. Malaysia is one of the most technologically developed countries amongst industrialising nations in the ASEAN region. The nation's persistent drive to engage modern technologies proves to be a great advantage to manufacturers in Malaysia.

In the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (11MP) 2016-2020, the government will continue to push the agenda of producing human capital that is equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in a globalised economy. By the end of the 11MP, 85,000 employers are expected to adopt policies in the 11MP, compared with 76,000 in 2013, which will benefit about 3.7 million employees. In addition, continuous upskilling and reskilling of the existing workforce will contribute to productivity growth. As a university committed to offer undergraduate programmes which encourage the intellectual and personal development of students, as well as respond to demands of the country, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) through its Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) is unveiling a new programme which specialises on the development of human capital in the manufacturing sector.

The new Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Industrial Management programme is designed in such a way that it will propel the students towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) with the strengths and knowledge in manufacturing, services, technology, and marketing research. The programme provides extensive understanding and knowledge of mastering the management of industry especially in manufacturing. Starting with basic business and management principles, the framework has been designed in such a way that it will benefit candidates in capitalising IT appliances to serve international operations. This programme provides an opportunity for employment in all of the major disciplines of Industrial Management or widely known as Operation Management. Graduates in this discipline will be looking forward to offer their services in various public and private sectors that include manufacturing, petroleum, banking and research entities. Organisationally, graduates will be employed in the Manufacturing, Logistics, Safety and Quality sectors as Project Planner, Scheduler and Researcher.

The knowledge in Industrial Management is important for the perpetuation of human knowledge as well as the development of our nation. According to 11MP’s fifth core, infrastructure to support economic expansion is to be strengthened. This includes the effort to improve the coverage, quality and affordability of infrastructure. Hence, we should strive to create and excel in conducting programme in Industrial Management while disseminating the knowledge accrued or mould them into viable technologies. UTAR’s Industrial Management programme would enable the younger generation to be equipped with analytical skills and capabilities to cater to the demands for expertise and professionals in the market. The demand for skilled workers and experts in the area of manufacturing is expected to escalate in the coming years.

The motive of introducing such a programme is to keep abreast with changes in the working environment, as the method of work in industries is shifting from department-based to project-based and multi-tasking. Therefore, an ideal project leader and technologist needs to be equipped with both technical engineering and management knowledge in order to remain competitive. These management knowledge include marketing strategy, cost optimisation, information systems, logistics management, and quality post commissioning. This programme equips student with the necessary knowledge and skill to be a good executive, manager and even technologist.

In line with UTAR’s vision to be a university of educational excellence with transformative societal impact, this three-year undergraduate programme provides a coherent body of professional knowledge and technical skills with the aim to produce competent as well as versatile professionals who can adapt to the diverse roles and responsibilities in a challenging and dynamic work environment. An added bonus to UTAR’s programme is its holistic education approach whereby soft skills-based courses are also integrated into the curriculum in order to improve the students in the areas of communication, complex problem solving, cultural intelligence, leadership, moral ethics, technopreneurship skills, digital literacy and so on. These soft skills are in parallel with the Top 10 skills pinpointed by the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report” and essential to survive the giant wave of the oncoming 4IR.

Other undergraduate programmes offered by UTAR FEGT include Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental, Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH). Postgraduate programmes such as Master of Engineering Science, Master of Engineering (Electronic Systems), Master of Environmental Technology, Master of Sustainable Construction Management, and Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering) are also available.
